Manager Profile: Donnie Bobblehead

When I was at Dodger Stadium on Don Mattingly bobblehead night, the Dodgers played this profile of Manager Don Mattingly on the DodgerVision video monitor. But instead of Donnie Baseball answering all the profile questions, we got to see his bobblehead do all the talking. I thought it was a very clever idea. Check it out:

Dodgers Select Local Kid With First Round Draft Pick

The 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft began today, and the Dodgers, who had the 16th overall pick, chose Chris Reed out of  Stanford University.

The Los Angeles Dodgers today selected Stanford University left-handed pitcher Chris Reed with their first-round pick (16th overall) in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. Assistant General Manager, Scouting Logan White made the announcement.

Reed, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound junior, earned an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection and has gone 6-2 with a 2.54 ERA in 28 games (one start) this season for the Cardinal, who advanced to the NCAA Super Regional after winning the Fullerton Regional this past weekend. In 2011, the 21-year-old has limited opposing hitters to a .201 batting average with 48 strikeouts and allowed just one home run in 49.2 innings. As a reliever, Reed has posted a 1.80 ERA and ranks third in the Pac-10 with nine saves in 11 attempts this season. In three seasons at Stanford, Reed is 8-2 with a 3.96 ERA in 53 games.

The Cleveland High School (Reseda) graduate was rated as the top prospect and earned an All-Star selection in the Atlantic Collegiate Summer League in 2010, posting a 1.09 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 33.0 innings.

It's nice to see the Dodgers drafting a local kid. Signing Reed may not be that easy though. For one, he's being represented by hard-nosed agent Scott Boras and two, he may choose to return to Stanford for his Senior year.

The Dodgers have selected a pitcher with their first pick in each of the last nine seasons.

Player Appearance: James Worthy

Former Lakers Forward and Hall of Famer James Worthy made an appearance at Living Spaces in Van Nuys today. He was scheduled to sign autographs from 10:00-12:00.

When I arrived at the Living Spaces at 8:45, there were about 75 people in line. I met my buddy Alejandro there. Luckily he was one of the first people in line and had a wristband waiting for me.

Mr. Worthy arrived very late, at around 10:45. He apologized and said he'd make it up to us. The line moved pretty quickly. I had him sign some basketball cards. He signed two of the three I put in front of him. He was very nice, taking pics with the fans as well.

Once we got our autos, we noticed the line was pretty short, so we got in it again. Luckily, my buddy Tom had a nice spot, so we didn't have to wait too much longer. I had Worthy sign my last card and I took another pic with him.

I had a great time today. Thanks to James Worthy and Living Spaces for hosting the event. Thanks to Alejandro for holding that spot for me, I really appreciate it. Thanks to Tom as well for letting us in with him. It was also nice seeing Teresa, George, Juan and Willie.

It's time for another bobblehead contest. This time I will be giving away a Don Mattingly Dodger bobblehead, the same one given away on June1 at Dodger Stadium. The bobblehead contest is sponsored by Bobbles Galore, the World's Largest SGA Bobblehead Reseller. I'm going to try something different this time, a Twitter contest. The contest will be held on Wednesday, June 8 following the Dodgers/Phillies game.

This time I won't ask some difficult question that only a hardcore Dodger fan would know the answer to. I'm going to keep it simple, giving everyone a chance to win.

So how do you win the Mattingly bobblehead?  You'll need to do a few things:

(1)You must be a follower of this blog. What does that mean? Your name must be in my list of 'Followers' in the blog sidebar. If you're already a follower, you can win. If you're not a follower, click on the 'FOLLOW' button in the sidebar.


(2)You must follow dodgerbobble on Twitter. Why? Because that's where you'll be answering my question. You can follow me by clicking here.

(3)Answer the question correctly. Wednesday evening, I'm going to Tweet a question. The question will be asked once the Dodgers/Phillies game ends. The first person to Tweet the correct answer back to me wins Mattingly.

Don Mattingly Bobblehead Night

Tonight was Don Mattingly bobblehead night at Dodger Stadium. Presented By Carl's Jr., this bobblehead was supposed to be given away to the first 50,000 fans in attendance. I don't even think there were 30,000 fans at the stadium today. Dodger Stadium was dead tonight. In years past, there would be hundreds of people in line waiting to get their bobbleheads. When we arrived, there was a very small group of people waiting to get into the Reserve section. You can see from my videos at the end of this post how bad it was.

When we left, they were moving the leftover bobbleheads.

Let's take a look at Mattingly:

This is a great bobblehead. I just don't think Mattingly was a great choice. I talked to a lot of people, and many said they didn't care about this one. There are so many fans staying away from Dodger Stadium for so many reasons, a bobblehead this weak didn't help attendance. I'm willing to bet this was the lowest attended bobblehead game ever. Another bobblehead night is here, Don Mattingly. Presented by Carls Jr., this bobblehead will be given away to the first 50,000 fans in attendance. It features Manager Don Mattingly standing at the top of the dugout steps.
