Fernando Valenzuela Bobblehead Night

On Tuesday, August21, the Dodgers gave away Fernando Valenzuela bobbleheads to the first 50,000 fans in attendance. Presented by State Farm, this bobble was the ninth in the series of ten Dodger Stadium Greats bobblehead series. The Dodgers played the Giants that night and lost 4-1.  Before the game, the Dodgers honored Fernando with a video tribute on the Jumbotron and then he threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

This is one of the stranger looking bobbleheads the Dodgers have given away. It commemorates the no-hitter Fernando pitched on June 29, 1990. Fernando wore glasses at the time, big gold glasses! Now, the bobblehead's gold glasses are a bit exaggerated, but that's the cool thing about it. Other than that it's pretty damn plain.

As most of you know, this is the fourth Fernando bobblehead the Dodgers have given away since they started handing them out back in 2001. If you ask me, it's enough. Yes, Fernando is a huge part of Dodger Stadium's 50 year history and he needed to be represented somehow, but they could have paired him up with Jaime Jarrin, who was somehow left out of the Stadium Greats Series after calling games in Spanish for the Dodgers for 54 years. In my opinion, this Fernando bobble was just another money grab by Frank McCourt, and I hope the new ownership group doesn't have to resort to these kind of tactics. Putting a good product on the field and winning will get people into the stadium and it looks like they've already begun doing that.

  1. The new owners use tactics like getting star players to draw a crowd. Maybe less bobbles next year and more new giveaways.

    2. I don't mind the 10 bobble heads especially given the anniversary. I would like to see more specials for tickets and better food deal nights, possibly coinciding with bobble head nights. That said, I want another Kershaw bobble head, either celebrating his past Cy Young and Gold Glove or just another bobble head (he's once again in the Cy Young race) and an Adrian Gonzalez bobble head. Perhaps the Dodgers could go the San Francisco Giants route and offer special ticket packages, though that is quite expensive.

    3. Agreed on everything. I love the $1 Dodger Dog nights. We need more promotions like that.

Yes, Kershaw needs another bobble honoring the Cy Young. Adrian and Hanley will probably both get one next year. The snubbing of Jaime Jarring this year probably gets him one next year too.

  2. I dig this bobble head, but yes I wish they did do a Jaime Jarrin bobble because I barely know of him and this should be used to introduce new and old fans to a man who has been a constant in the Dodger Organization for longer than anyone not named Scully.

    1. Not sure about Crawford, cuz he really hasn't done anything and probably won't until later in 2013. Cruz could be a possibility.

    1. Maybe. I can picture the bobblehead of Magic wearing a suit and holding up the Dodger jersey or something.

  6. That's also a possibility. As long as they don't do ten again. That really killed the hobby in my opinion.

    1. Ten was a bit a lot, but I have to admit, it did bring me to the stadium and I did enjoy most of the bobbleheads.

      How many are you suggesting?

  9. For next year, if they run out of current player options, I could see a possibility of Hanley Ramirez with his "I C U" position or swinging the bat position http://www.trbimg.com/img-50117df1/turbine/la-sp-sn-dodgers-ramirez-20120726-001/600, maybe Adrian Gonzalez, Chad Billingsley, and maybe Kenley Jansen or something. What do you think?
