Josh Hamilton Bobblehead Night

Last night I made the 100 mile drive to Bakersfield to catch a Blaze game. The Blaze are the single-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds in the California League.  I went out there with buddies Mike of Nomo's Sushi Platter fame and Tom. The Blaze were giving away Josh Hamilton bobbleheads to the first 500 fans in attendance. Hamilton played for the team in 2002 when they were an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

This was only the second minor league game I had ever been to, and the first one was a lot of fun, so I couldn't wait to get down there. When we arrived at Sam Lynn Ballpark there were a couple of short lines, nothing too crazy. We only waited about ten minutes before the gates opened. When we got in we opened up the bobblehead boxes right away to see Hamilton. What we saw was a bit shocking. Let's just say it's not the average bobblehead. We'll take a look at that in a sec. As far as the game goes, it was pretty lackluster. The Blaze lost to the Stockton Ports 6-0. Oh, we did run into former major-league pitcher-turned agent Dave Stewart. He was sitting a couple sections from us watching one of his clients play, so of course I had to get his autograph.

Back to the bobblehead. I don't know much about this, like who designed it or where it was made. It's just so...weird. Take a look.

Obviously it looks nothing like Hamilton, but I must admit, it does put a smile on my face so I'm happy to add it to the collection. I had a great time at the Blaze game too and can't wait to get back there for another game!

Scully And Koufax Special Edition Bobbleheads Available At BobblesGalore.com

In February, the Dodgers announced they would be offering limited edition Vin Scully and Sandy Koufax bobbleheads to season ticket holders with the purchase of a special ticket package. These two bobbleheads are now available at BobblesGalore.com

There were only 3,000 Scully's and 1,955 Koufax's made. Each bobblehead is numbered and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The Koufax pose is from his famous picture after he threw his fourth no-hitter, holding two baseballs in each hand. The Scully plays a portion of the famous Kirk Gibson homerun call from game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

First Look: Fernando Valenzuela Bobblehead

pic via @Dodgers

The Dodgers needed to release the picture of one final 2012 bobblehead, Fernando Valenzuela. Today they finally showed it to us. This bobble celebrates the no-hitter Fernando threw on June 29, 1990. If you hadn't noticed, Fernie is wearing some rather large glasses making this one of the funniest looking Dodger bobbleheads ever given away.

This Fernando bobblehead will be given away on Tuesday, August 21 when the Dodgers take on the San Francisco Giants.

The Joy Of A Completed Project

Last October I went to a Steve Garvey appearance in Ontario. It was then I decided to start my third Great Infield autograph project by getting each one of them on their own baseball. I  got Garv that day,  Ron Cey on Opening Day, and Davey Lopes before a game earlier this year. Bill Russell, maybe the easiest of the four to get, had been eluding me. I missed him in autograph alley once and again at Dodger FanFest.

I was happy when I found out Russell would be signing again in autograph alley on  Friday, July 13. I couldn't wait to get up to Dodger Stadium to finish the project. When I got up there, there was just a handful of people waiting to get the signature. The one auto I had waited the longest to get, in the end only took a few minutes of my time, but it was worth the wait.

Making Trades On Facebook

I've made a few trades on Facebook over the last month. Two of those trades were with FB friend Ryan. He offered up a boatload of Dodger cards that interested me, so we got a couple of deals done. Here's everything I picked up in the two trades:

2012 Topps Golden Moments Andre Ethier auto

2008 UD SPx Andre Ethier jersey /99

2012 Topps Golden Moments Chad Billingsley auto

2001 Upper Deck SP Gary Sheffield jersey

2010 Bowman Platinum Josh Lindblom auto

2011 GQ Matt Kemp jersey

2010 UD Matt Kemp jersey

2002 Donruss Mike Piazza jersey /50

2011 Bowman Sterling Nathan Eovaldi auto

2011 Bowman Sterling Zach Lee auto

2005 Upper Deck  Pedro Guerrero auto
Facebook has become a great place to meet great traders from all across the country. Not only have I picked up cards, but autographs and bobbleheads as well. Thanks again for the trade Ryan! I hope we can do this again.

Tommy Lasorda/Walter Alston Bobblehead Night

Last Saturday the Dodgers honored former Managers Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda with a dual bobblehead. Presented by Bank of America this bobblehead was given to the first 50,000 fans in attendance.

Usually, I go the bobblehead games with Mrs.Dodger Bobble, but earlier in the day I won two more tickets at a Steve Garvey appearance, so we took our two sons with us. We arrived at Dodger Stadium early, over two hours before game time, because the last time the Dodgers gave away a bobblehead on a Saturday night, I ended up getting there very late. Plus, former Dodger catcher Paul LoDuca was signing autographs in autograph alley from 4:10-5:30 and I knew there would be a lot of people trying to get his autograph.

Boy was I right. When we got to autograph alley there was already a very long line for LoDuca. We heard he was only personalizing autographs, which was a little disappointing, but we decided to get the signature anyway.  Paul was very nice, and signed everything put down in front of him. It was a little strange to see a Dodger employee standing over his shoulder making sure he personalized every autograph.

That's me and LoDuca

From there, we went up and got our bobbleheads. There was a surprisingly small crowd there that night. Dr. Frank Jobe, famous for performing the first Ulnar Collateral Ligament replacement surgery, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Tommy John, the man who Jobe performed the first surgery on and who the surgery is now named for. It was a touching moment which received a standing ovation.

Like every other bobblehead recipient, Lasorda and Alston got a  nice video tribute on the Jumbotron which also got a standing ovation. The Dodgers on the other hand did not deserve a standing ovation. After taking a 6-5 lead into the 9th inning, and being only one strike away from winning, Closer Kenley Jansen had a brain fart on the mound. The Padres had runners on second and third base when Jansen began removing dirt from his cleat. The runner at third saw this and stole home. Jansen then  made a high throw to the plate allowing the next baserunner to score. The Dodgers failed to score in the bottom of the ninth, and fell to the Padres 7-6. It was a sad way to end a night that started off good.

On to the bobblehead. This is another dual mini bobblehead that looks absolutely amazing. I'm not a big fan of the size, but I can live with it because of how great the features are. Lasorda looks like Lasorda and Alston looks like Alston. Enough said.

The next bobblehead giveaway is Kirk Gibson on Tuesday, July 31 when the Dodgers play the Arizona Diamondbacks.

I've been asked more questions about the Hello Kitty bobble then the Vin Scully or Sandy Koufax. It's a nice looking bobblehead that's definitely a collectors item for the Dodger fan or Hello Kitty fan.
