Sandy Koufax Bobblehead Night

Tuesday, August 7 was Sandy Koufax bobblehead night at Dodger Stadium. Presented by Time Warner Cable, the Dodgers gave away Koufax bobbles to the first 50,000 fans in attendance. Koufax and Vin Scully are the two bobbleheads Dodger fans have been waiting for for a long time and we finally got our hands on the first of the two.

When I arrived at Dodger Stadium I noticed a lot of people leaving with cases of bobbleheads. I've seen people do this in the past, but this time there were more people doing it then usual. I should have taken pictures of some of the stacks of tickets people had. I saw one guy with a couple hundred! Not sure how many of those people stayed, but the stadium looked pretty empty. Vin Scully announced 50,000+ but I don't think it was even close.

The one disappointing thing about the entire night was Koufax not being in attendance. In my heart I was hoping he would be at Dodger Stadium, but I knew it wasn't gonna happen. Maybe one of these days he'll surprise us all and throw out the first pitch.

On to the bobblehead. Koufax is my favorite athlete of all time, so this bobble has now become my favorite. Nothing too special here, but it sure does look like the great lefty.

Up next, Fernando Valenzuela on Tuesday, August 21.

  1. One of these days he will surprise us and pitch in a game at Dodger Stadium.

I think a lot of people bought blocks of tickets and just hauled some bobbles home. I am sure that 50,000 tickets were bought but, a decent protion of those people were looking to profit off the game and not to stay for the game.

    1. Yeah, I know. That's the world we live in. That's why bobblehead collecting sucks now.

  2. I agree, they should change it back to one person per item. I hope the organization sees this and change back their giveaway policy.

    1. I disagree because I came out on a date with my girlfriend and had 3 tickets. My sister wanted a bobble head but couldn't make it to the game. Under your wish I would have had to walk to my car drop off the bobble heads and come back.

    2. If it's a reasonable amount yes. If it's hundreds, that's a different story.

    3. I have to ask the question of, what's the difference? More butts in the seats? Does it make a difference? I'm not really seeing the issue here. Hard economic times have caused people to try and find different ways to accumulate money, for some it may the purchase of a large amount of seats and selling the bobble heads. Really what is the difference if one person gets 100 bobbles and 100 people get 100 bobbles? There are still 100 bobbles, and in the situation with 100 bobble to one person, is it likely they'll keep the 100? No, they'll probably sell them and distribute the bobble heads on their terms. It seems to me that preventing people from getting 100 bobbles is just jealousy. Is it hurting you or any business? No, not in the least.

    4. I've never had a problem with a line hold-ups at Dodger either, whether on Field, Reserve, or Top Deck. It just seems to be a non-issue. No problem or harm is caused by someone else getting 100 bobbles.

    5. Furthermore, the Dodgers give away 50,000 of these bobble heads every game. It's unlikely a single person who went to the game walked out without a bobble head. I would have a problem if it's an item such as the Dodger Stadium replica, where there was only 15000/20000. But the bobble heads don't cause this.

Hey echo bunny boy these are supposed to Be for the true fans not the self made eBay business men. I think the policy should also be changhed.this is coming from a dodger and bobblehead fan of over 26 years not trying to make a profit on my dodgers. Even if the beers are expensive.

    7. I'm okay with people buying 1-10 extra. But anything within the hundreds is a bit overkill..

    8. If the true fans wanted the bobble heads, there are tickets on stubhub and other ticket selling establishments. They can get to the gameand also a true blue fan isn't defined by such standards. Furthermore, get off your high horse. Not everyone can afford to think like you, if you didn't know not everyone has the financial capability to not try and stretch their dollar. They are no less true blue fans just because they are poorer than you. And the Dodgers are making a profit off of being the Dodgers, the selling and distribution of the bobble heads through any means, is part of that.

    9. If you can't sympathize with another human being's desire to make some more money and enjoy a baseball then what's wrong with you?

      Delete
    10. Furthermore, can you say you've never broken a bobble head or purchased a cool looking bobble head off of eBay? Because if you have then the eBay businessman helped you out.

    11. And last but not least, the Dodgers aren't your's. They are in now way a part of you, and even if you stopped watching I and many more millions of people would continue watching.

    12. If they change it to one per person, BobblesGalore.com would go out of business!

  3. I really enjoyed the video they showed of Sandy's Career Highlights before the game. It can be found on the Dodgers Website in the video section. He had a pretty amazing career very dominate stats. 89 Complete games 300 + K's for 3 season and about 25 wins per season in his prime. It a nice bobble. Only two more to go. Really looking forward to the Vin Bobble. I also so many fans walking away with miltiple cases. I wonder if the same will happen for the Vin Bobble. I really hope they change that policy next year. Its not fair to the real fans. With the price they pay for tickets and the price they charge for shipping and postage plus the price of the item I wonder how much a profit they make when they sell those on E-Bay.

    1. I was wondering the same thing. They can't make that much, right?

      Delete
    2. Depends on the going rate for the bobble heads and how much he paid for tickets. Most bobble heads go for $20, Koufax will probably be a little higher, and I paid $10 for a ticket in the top deck. Easy profit, however, I also over paid for my tickets because I purchased a bobble head plan. Also, if I was seeking profit I would get to dodger by the metro.

    3. It's not a crazy amount, however, it is enough to justify the experience.

    4. I was thinking about doing the bobble head hording, however, with school and such I can't find the time. I could use the money for bills such as books for college and tuition.

    5. @Dodgerbobble You should ask the guy from BobblesGalore.com on whether he "can't make that much, right?" on those inflated prices in his DODGERS ONLY section.

      Delete
    6. The reason I assume people can't make that much is because I don't purchase anything from BobblesGalore. I make the connection that because I don't buy from because they're high priced, most others won't as well. eBay is huge, and when I look for anything online I end up there anyways. I'm assuming this is how most people go about random items like this. I could be wrong, or possibly just smarter. Either way, I doubt the man is leaving in a mansion in Beverly Hills.

  6. Dodgers got greedy they should have made individual tickets available from the beginning. They got greedy and shot there selves in the foot. It could have been a sold out event with great atmospher, instead it was a typical weekday game

    ReplyDelete

    1. That seems to be the problem here, that it was a weekday game. I don't know why the Dodgers give most of these bobble heads out on weekdays, but most teams in baseball have less attendance in weekdays than weekends. I think the Sandy Koufax night should have been a weekend game.

      Delete
  7. It could have. But many fans did not stay for the game and were walking away with cases of bobbleheads and selling them on Ebay to make a profit. Dodgers shot themselves on the other foot for that. It's getting ridiculous.

    1. How do you know they didn't stay for the game? They could have been dropping off bobble heads into their vechicles and coming back with an extra ticket. It's what I would have done.

  8. To my astonishment, the Koufax bobble heads aren't going for too much. I usually purchase 2 tickets (1 for myself and 1 for my girlfriend) but this time decided to go for 4. To my surprise, there are many listings on Craigslist and Ebay going for roughly 15-20 bucks. I put an ad up looking for a trade, but there hasn't been much offers at all. Seems like the Hello Kitty bobble heads was an easier trade. Quite disappointed since I thought Koufax would be an easy trade but I guess not.

One thing I am certain of however, Scully is going to be a hot item. Fernando, on the other hand, makes me thing will be about 20 also.

    2. Bobble heads are pricey, mostly the older ones, but with the high amount of bobble heads given away (50,000) and collectors and eBay being able to cheap/list, respectively, easily. I doubt these Sandy Koufax bobble heads will go up too much. However, the no hitter bobble head looks awesome and is selling quite well.

  9. Hi also one question, was wondering if you could answer:
I was looking on your site and on the right side is a list of stadium bobblehead giveaways. I look on ebay and I see Kermit and Ms Piggy bobbleheads. Do you know if those are SGA's also? Do you know anything about them? Thanks man!

    1. They were not Stadium giveaways. They were however sold in the stadium at the top of the park gift shop.

  10. Some commentators on here have a weird opinion of others, the fans who purchase and obtain hundreds of bobble heads are not bad fans. They're doing what they wish to do to try and provide for themselves. I find it sickening that you think so highly of yourselves that you knock them down for it. If that is how you feel then you may be Dodger fans, but you are garbage. As plain and simple as that, try and sympathize with another human being for once in your life instead of pointing the blame. It may stink, and I think pride is the emotion in play here, but y'all need to realize that this has in no way effected your life or any one else's life. There were plenty of tickets available for the game on many ticket selling websites. They may have been high because of the bobble head giveaway, but they were available. I'm also not saying any of the individuals who purchased the 100s of tickets were saints. Y'all just need to get over someone having more things than you. It's the system in place in the United States that causes most of these "problems", though I think in this case it may just be a bunch of white collar Dodger fans thinking they're better than someone.

    2. I totally agree! Besides, where does the guy who owns BobblesGalore.com get his bobbleheads from??? I don't see any backlash against the guy who has a section of "DODGERS ONLY" bobbleheads on his website. Heck, he's even affiliated/linked to this site! He's probably the one who got the 315 Sandy Koufax bobbleheads that was mentioned in this thread.

    3. Im sure bobbles galore has a deal with the manufacturer. And my beef aint with ppl that get a few and sell them. My beef is the ppl who are in and out with dozens of bobbles not leaving any for true fans and collectors who get cought up in traffic or work

      Delete
    4. There are 50000 bobble heads given out. The only fans who don't get the bobble head typically join in the 4th inning. Most of the games haven't even been in the 50000 range, and the only game where there was a concern about a bobble head, from my perspective, was the first bobble head. After that it's been smooth sailing.

    5. I can't speak for BobblesGalore.com. I couldn't care less where they come from, I don't use his website because he tends to overcharge anyways.

    6. He or she, I really don't know which gender the owner is.

    7. I doubt BobblesGalore has a deal with the manufacturer, these are exclusively sold to the Dodgers, however, maybe he has a deal with the Dodgers. I doubt that as well. On their website they don't answer how they obtain them.

  11. Taking it with a grain of salt, there is the logical deduction that since BobblesGalore.com is a website in the business of buying and selling bobble heads at marked up prices then they would use the very strategy of buying 100s of bobble heads to their advantage. Also another point on the "true blue fans" who went to the Sandy Koufax giveaway, I had some folks sit behind me discuss bobble heads for a lengthy period of time, even mentioning Bobbles Galore particularly. However, once the game reached 4 innings they left the stadium and went home. I don't think we can so easily define a true fan of baseball as simply someone who only purchases a select number of tickets and then leaves early. I think that a true fan is anyone who claims to be one, whether backed up with money or not.

  12. Wow this issue im sure goes beyond bobble heads. Its all give aways while we're on our way up. People are on there way out with dozens of giveaways screwing others out of the experience and a collectors item

    1. There's 50000 bobble heads given away, I didn't meet a single person who didn't get a bobble head. There's also only so many tickets the Dodgers can sell. I doubt anyone went home empty handed.

    5. I've stated before that if the item is not a 50000 giveaway item such as the Cy Young Replica and Dodger Stadium Replica given away earlier this season, then yes that is a something that should not be given away in bundles, however, they didn't do such things on those days. They did one per ticket. They've only done the mass ticket giveaways on bobblehead days, and on those days if you don't receive one that is your fault.

  13. I guess the way I'm gonna look at this is that the Dodgers are selling tickets, making money and will hopefully turn around and spend the money they make on players.

    1. Ticket revenue, as much as some want to believe, has little effect on the overall Dodgers profit. The advertisements sold on the bobble heads, around the park, and everywhere else (including ESPECIALLY television deals) are the main stream of money.

Another stream of money that I always don't like to hear is how any one player can increase a team's profit through jersey sales. All MLB merchandise profit is shared equally by all 30 teams. Their gain is equal to everyone else's gain.

    2. I am hearing that the Dodgers are going to try and create YES west, essentially. Which could mean that the Dodgers will become the Yankees of the West. Which is not a bad thing at all, assuming Ned Colletti keeps making savvy deals (Victorino, Hanley, Blanton).
