Don Drysdale/Maury Wills Dual Bobblehead Night

Things didn't start off so great for me last night. When I left home for Dodger Stadium, I was so excited about getting the first bobblehead of the year. But my excitement soon turned into aggravation once I got onto the 5 freeway. It took over two hours to get from home to the game, and I'm only 20 miles away. So when I finally got to my seat, I just wanted to eat a Dodger Dog, drink a cold beer, look at my new bobblehead and enjoy the game.

What a game, huh? The first bobblehead of the year. Bryce Harper's MLB debut. A pitcher's dual between Chad Billingsley and Stephen Strasburg. A comeback win by the Dodgers that ended with a Matt Kemp walk-off homerun! There was definitely a playoff atmosphere.

I got there so late, there were only a few cases of bobbles left

That's Bryce Harper, I swear!

On to the bobblehead. Don Drysdale, who won the Cy Young Award in 1962 and Maury Wills, who won the National League MVP that same year, were honored with a dual bobblehead.  When the box was first handed to me, I was shocked to see the size of it. I knew it was mini bobblehead, but it still seemed pretty small. Once I opened it though, I liked what I saw. Starting with the gold base to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dodger Stadium.  The rest of the paint job is fantastic as well, from the uniform colors to the skin tone, everything is right. The facial features are OK, but I'll give them credit for getting them so close on such a small bobble. The plaques on the grass are a nice touch too. My only complaint besides the size of the dual bobblehead is the bat Maury Wills is holding. It doesn't screw in. For now it seems like it's nice and snug in his hands, but I'll have to keep my eye on it.

Let's take a look:

The next bobblehead giveaway is Orel Hershiser on May 15.

First Look: The Infield Bobblehead

Via Dodgers April 10-15 Playbill
For those of you who made it out to Dodger Stadium this week, you probably were given the first playbill of the year, which has a beautiful black and white picture of the '62 team holding their hats over their hearts on the cover.

I rarely read the playbill, in fact, when I get it at the front gate I usually toss it in my back seat and don't think twice about it. I had three hours to kill before the game started on Opening Day, so I actually skimmed through it. What caught my eye was on page 3, a picture of the first three bobbleheads the Dodgers are giving away this year. Of course we've already seen the Drysdale/Wills bobble, but this was the first time the Dodgers showed pics of the Orel Hershiser bobblehead and the infield bobblehead of Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Ron Cey.

It's a low-res picture, but from what I can tell they did a pretty good job on all of them. Check out Davey Lopes' little afro!  I know the Orel Hershiser is a full-size bobblehead, but I'm not sure about the infield. Either way, I'm very excited about all ten bobbleheads the Dodgers are giving away this season. Don't forget, that first giveaway is in two weeks!

Bobblehead of the Day: Don Drysdale

August 12th was the 26th anniversary of Don Drysdale's induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Drysdale made it in after ten years of eligibility. He pitched for 14 seasons with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, winning 209 games and posting a 2.95 ERA with 2,486 strikeouts. Drysdale won the 1962 National League Cy Young Award after going 25-9 with a 2.83 ERA, 314.1 innings pitched and 232 strikeouts, leading the league in each category except ERA. He set a record by tossing 58 straight scoreless innings, before it was broken by another Dodger, Orel Hershiser. Never afraid to pitch inside, Drysdale hit 154 batters which remains a NL record. One thing that always stands out for me is that Drysdale was from Los Angeles. Van Nuys to be exact. I could write forever on "Big D's" accomplishments in baseball. You can check out his website here. Drysdale died in Montreal of a heart attack in 1993 while traveling with the Dodgers as a broadcaster.

On Friday, August 20, 2004 the Dodgers gave away Don Drysdale bobbleheads to the first 50,000 fans in attendance. Presented by Bosley Hair Restoration, this bobblehead was made by P Squared Promotions. This was the third of three bobbleheads given away that year. The other two were Eric Gagne(4/30) and Don Newcombe(7/23).

The Dodgers played the Atlanta Braves that night and won 3-2. Jose Lima started for the Dodgers and John Thomson for Atlanta. Lima went eight innings, giving up only 1 run. Eric gagne also made an appearance, giving up one run. Giovanni Carrara was the winning pitcher for LA.

Here's Big D:

He does have a chip in his left ear, but that's how he came out of the box. I still love this one. It's one of my favorites. I wish the Dodgers would do more Hall of Famers. Of course, I would love to see a Sandy Koufax bobblehead right next to my Drysdale. Like Vin Scully, I doubt we'll ever see a Koufax bobblehead.
