Jaime Jarrin Doesn't Get A Bobblehead, But He Does Get A T-Shirt. Oh, And Dodgerbobble Got Some Autographs!

Normally I don't write about any other Dodger Stadium promotional nights besides bobblehead nights, but last Monday I attended Jaime Jarrin T-shirt night, and I wanted to talk about it a bit. The first 30,000 fans in attendance received shirts with Jarrin's famous catch phrase "Se Va, Se Va, Se Va" on the front which means going, going, going and "despidala con un beso!" on the back, which means kiss it goodbye. I'm talking about this promotion because I think the Dodgers screwed up by not giving Jarrin a bobblehead this year. I know this has been talked about and written about numerous times, but I thought I'd mention it again. With ten bobbleheads being given away at Dodger Stadium to commemorate the 50th anniversary, the Spanish voice of the Dodgers didn't get one, which I consider a slap in the face after 54 years of service. Maybe they wanted to make him one and he didn't want it, who knows, but if Vin Scully finally got one, why not Jaime?

Jarrin was honored before the game with a special video from the Dodgers and he also threw out the ceremonial first pitch. But before the ceremony on the field, Jaime met with the fans and signed autographs. I've been lucky enough to meet him a few times, but never got the autographs I really wanted, on the sweet spot of a baseball. That night I finally got it, plus a couple others.

Don Drysdale/Maury Wills Dual Bobblehead Night

Things didn't start off so great for me last night. When I left home for Dodger Stadium, I was so excited about getting the first bobblehead of the year. But my excitement soon turned into aggravation once I got onto the 5 freeway. It took over two hours to get from home to the game, and I'm only 20 miles away. So when I finally got to my seat, I just wanted to eat a Dodger Dog, drink a cold beer, look at my new bobblehead and enjoy the game.

What a game, huh? The first bobblehead of the year. Bryce Harper's MLB debut. A pitcher's dual between Chad Billingsley and Stephen Strasburg. A comeback win by the Dodgers that ended with a Matt Kemp walk-off homerun! There was definitely a playoff atmosphere.

On to the bobblehead. Don Drysdale, who won the Cy Young Award in 1962 and Maury Wills, who won the National League MVP that same year, were honored with a dual bobblehead.  When the box was first handed to me, I was shocked to see the size of it. I knew it was mini bobblehead, but it still seemed pretty small. Once I opened it though, I liked what I saw. Starting with the gold base to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dodger Stadium.  The rest of the paint job is fantastic as well, from the uniform colors to the skin tone, everything is right. The facial features are OK, but I'll give them credit for getting them so close on such a small bobble. The plaques on the grass are a nice touch too. My only complaint besides the size of the dual bobblehead is the bat Maury Wills is holding. It doesn't screw in. For now it seems like it's nice and snug in his hands, but I'll have to keep my eye on it.

First Look: The Infield Bobblehead

For those of you who made it out to Dodger Stadium this week, you probably were given the first playbill of the year, which has a beautiful black and white picture of the '62 team holding their hats over their hearts on the cover. 


I rarely read the playbill, in fact, when I get it at the front gate I usually toss it in my back seat and don't think twice about it. I had three hours to kill before the game started on Opening Day, so I actually skimmed through it. What caught my eye was on page 3, a picture of the first three bobbleheads the Dodgers are giving away this year. Of course we've already seen the Drysdale/Wills bobble, but this was the first time the Dodgers showed pics of the Orel Hershiser bobblehead and the infield bobblehead of Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Ron Cey.


It's a low-res picture, but from what I can tell they did a pretty good job on all of them. Check out Davey Lopes' little afro!  I know the Orel Hershiser is a full-size bobblehead, but I'm not sure about the infield. Either way, I'm very excited about all ten bobbleheads the Dodgers are giving away this season. Don't forget, that first giveaway is in two weeks!

Dodger Bobblehead News And Notes

Forever Collectibles has released two new Dodger bobbleheads, Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw. It's been a while since we've seen new Dodger bobbleheads from Forever. These bobbles are 8 inches tall and  have the normal sized heads. Both sell for $24.99 at Dodgers.com. I've never been a fan of the Forever bobbleheads but these are pretty damn nice. They both look a lot like Matt and Clayton.


The Dodgers have added a bobblehead to the promotional schedule. No, it's not another Dodger Stadium great. It's Hello Kitty. The Dodgers will be giving away Hello Kitty mini bobbleheads to the first 50,000 fans on Sunday, July 1. This is not the first time the team has had a Hello Kitty promotion. Last year they gave away Hello Kitty Plush dolls. I've added this bobblehead in the sidebar.


The Albuquerque Isotopes, AAA affiliate of the Dodgers, released their promotional schedule. They will be giving away three bobbles in 2012. Former player and coach Jason Wood gets the first bobblehead on May 28. The second will be a Green Chile Pepper bobblehead on August 19. The last one is an Isotopes bobble logo on September 3.

And finally, I just wanted share this great picture of Dodger legend Maury Wills posing with his upcoming bobblehead. This dual bobblehead of Maury and Don Drysdale will be given away on April 28 and is the first of ten Dodger Stadium Greats bobbleheads. First Look: Don Drysdale & Maury Wills Dual Bobblehead

  We're getting a glimpse of the first Dodger bobblehead of 2012, the Don Drysdale & Maury Wills dual bobble. The guys are standing on a patch of grass atop a gold base. In front of both players is a plaque. 1962 Cy Young Award winner in front of Drysdale and 1962 NL MVP in front of Wills. The characteristics on both of them are pretty accurate. I've got to admit they did an excellent job on this one.

This bobblehead will be given away on Saturday, April 28 when the Dodgers play the Washington Nationals.

Another Dodgers auto card. This is 2006 Upper Deck Artifacts Auto-Facts Maury Wills #d 145/150. He's another one of my favorite all-time Dodgers. You can read Wills' bio here.

Back in September, Maury Wills made an appearance at the LA County Fair's Dodger Day. I had an opportunity to meet Wills, but passed so I could meet Steve Garvey. Hopefully I'll get another chance to meet the Dodger legend. In the meantime, I've got his autograph on a card.

LA County Fair's Dodger Day: Garvey and Sax Autograph

Thursday, September 9, was Dodger Day at the LA County Fair in Pomona. Four former players appeared at the event, Steve Sax, Maury Wills, Steve Garvey and Fernando Valenzuela. These events always get crazy, but I know that it's a lot crazier when Garvey and Fernando appear. I knew I had to get there as early as possible. My mission was to get Steve Garvey to autograph his bobblehead.

The appearances began at 4:00 pm, with Steve Sax signing first for an hour. They would continue every hour after that for one hour at a time. Maury Wills was at 5:00, Steve Garvey at 6:00 and Fernando at 7:00.

I arrived at the fair at 1:15, hoping it would be early enough. I'm always very late to these things. Well, I was early enough. There was only one line when I got there and I was about 30 people back. Security told us that we would have to get back in line once we got Sax's autograph. THERE WAS JUST ONE LINE? This had disaster written all over it.

Standing in line, it's always fun to chat with the people around you, and I did meet some nice people waiting for Steve Sax. I can't remember all of their names, but a couple of them said they read the blog. COOL! They all had some nice Dodger stories to tell.

Once 4:00 rolled around, the line moved quickly. I noticed there was a second line forming off to the side. I asked them what they were waiting for. Some people were waiting for Garvey, some for Fernando. OK, so this is where I'm gonna go once I get the Sax auto. Well, I finally got to Sax, and he was very nice. I told him I was huge fan and he said thanks. He signed my 1982 Fleer rookie card for me.

Once I got the autograph, I went to that secondary line people were waiting in. I was about 40 people back, so I was in good shape for Steve Garvey. Maury Wills was next, but I was there to get Steve Garvey's autograph. While waiting, I met some more great people. The first person I met was a man named Bruce. You can read Bruce's Dodger Day experience here. He had some nice stories to tell. While I was chatting with Bruce, a couple of guys stepped into line and started talking to Bruce, I figured they were related. They weren't, they had just met each other waiting for Steve Sax. So, who were these guys? One was Greg from Plaschke Thy Sweater Is Argyle and Memories of Kevin Malone. He recognized me from the site. The other was a nice guy named Eric. We chatted for a while, then things got chaotic. Security had to do something with the second line of people that had formed. So, they formed three seperate lines, one for each of the remaing players. Why didn't they think of this earlier?

I jumped into the Steve Garvey line. Waiting in the Garvey line I met more poeple, with more stories to tell. This is what the fans do to pass the time. Looking to the left, there was a huge line starting to form for Fernando. I didn't want any part of that. I was sticking to my mission, Garvey then go home.

Garvey showed up on time, and the line started moving. I've got to admit, this was one of the good things about the event, they moved the line along nicely. I got the bobblehead out. Once I got to the front of the line, that's when Fernando showed up. The crowd went crazy. But I was there for the Iron Man. Once it was my turn, I handed him the bobblehead. I told him to sign the helmet. Then I started telling him I was a huge fan, and that it was nice to meet him. While I was blabbering away, I noticed he was signing the base of the bobblehead. I asked him if he could please sign the helmet. He said sorry, then went on to give me an additional signature right on the side of the helmet. I got two Garvey autographs on one bobblehead! Nice. Mission accomplished.

As I was walking away, Eric asked me if I wanted to wait for Fernando. I took one look at the line, and said, no. There were at least 1,000 people in line for Fernando, if not more. That's when I knew it was time to go home.

Overall, I'd say I had a good day. I got 2 of the four player's autographs. I was there for Garvey, so getting Sax was a bonus for me. I met some nice people too. It was also nice to meet Greg from MoKM in person. That's the second Dodger blogger I've met now, Roberto from Vin Scully is My Homeboy being the first.
